Its got Windows 2000 on it... to be honest not sure if it connects to interweb, as hasn't been switched on at least a couple of years, as the youngest nicked my laptop!

I think a project for weekend... get a vacuum on it give it a clean, and then power it up

I think you need at least Windows 7 for SSD support.

I did put a SSD in a Windows XP machine but this was years ago and maybe an 'old' SSD was suitable for an old operating system.

It may be possible but without the OS supporting 'TRIM', they had no understanding of how the lifespan of SSD's work so their life could be reduced.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

I think an SSD can self-trim, but it has to be idle for a certain period of time, and the OS can often get in the way of that.

well, the hardest bit of that was getting the case apart without breaking anything :( good old youtube videos showed me to remove the 2 rubber feet by the monitor hinges to get the 2 screws I had missed :(

I used Macrium free which Ste mentioned previously as when i went to the ADATA site to dl the SSD tool, that was linked to as well, and I read that the free version of easeus can still be used to make images, but not clone.

took a little while to make the clone, but that may be because the enclosure I used was a cheap usb 2.0 one I had as a "spare" :)

plugged it all in switched on, booted into Win 10 no problem, was worried it wouldn't find OS and I'd have to mess around with a boot disk to fix that.

looks like my main laptop may get an upgrade, I've been thinking about it for ages, then saw the following when looking at the partitions in Linux
Quote:

Disk is OK, 37 bad sectors (44° C/111° F)

that's reassuring, kind of :) I guess the the bad ones are put to one side :)

it's a 320gb hdd, not sure how old this Dell is, core i3 win7, so not ancient, well actually probably is, but I only use it for internet so is fine, guess I'll keep an eye on hotukdeals again for a bargain

320GB makes it sound ancient, even my TB drives are getting on a bit now. 😂 I don't think 37 bad sectors is unusual, what does SMART say?
